Tips & Tricks #3 - Use the symbols carefully
Hello Students. Welcome to Mystery In Chemistry’s Tips & Tricks series. Understanding chemistry and scoring high in exams are two different things and hence require different skill sets. Let us learn the third tip to help you score 100/100 in chemistry.
So here is the third tip. Use the symbols carefully. Confused?? Let me explain this further. Let’s say the question is “Arrange the following in increasing order of B.Ps Trimethylamine, ethanol and ethyl amine.” You know - Boiling Point depends upon H-Bonding. And H-Bonding is possible only when H- atom is directly attached to more electronegative atom., In the first one H-bonding is absent because no H-atoms attached to N-atom. B.P. should be the least here.BP should be high in alcohols as compare to amines. H-bonding is stronger in alcohols sa O is more electronegative than N-atom. Everything is clear. you can write the answer: Here you need the 3rd Tip- Use the symbol carefully. Check the answer. Compounds are in proper order but if symbols are just opposite. Then the answer will be completely wrong. And you are losing marks, because of this small carelessness. So be very careful while using symbols. Thank you.
